STOP PRESS: Surrey County Council are considering prohibiting all motorised and horse drawn vehicles from these byways with a 'prohibition of traffic' order. Turning north off of Shere Road, south of West Horsley, this lane begins life as a metalled and therefore easy UCR which doubles as a farm track for the 300m or so to Woodcote Farm. From this point, although it is reclassified as BOAT, the lane continues northwards through Hook Wood as a driveway as far as Fullers Farm, after which the surface changes to initially gravel and then for the rest of it's length into a heavily rutted, undulating dirt surface, interspersed with long sections covered with protruding tree roots.
Make no mistake, this is not an easy lane to drive in any vehicle. It's best tackled in low box, at an absolute crawl, and with extreme care. There's a chance that if you don't know what you're doing you might damage your vehicle or (worse!) the lane. An 'easier' section is pictured above left.
From Fullers Farm, the lane continues north, gently curving left and then right as it exits Hook Wood, following field boundaries. On the western side of the lane some beautiful views of the rolling fields towards Guildford can be had (pictured below right). This mid section of the lane is certainly the hardest part. Undergrowth isn't really a factor, but the surface makes it tricky, and even more so that many horses at Wix Hill Stables regularly use this route and may therefore be encountered. If you do, find somewhere sensible to give way, switch off your engine and and wait for them to pass.
The lane continues downhill (if driven in a northerly direction) and becomes much easier as it passes through a beautiful beech copse, after which springs its last surprise in the form of a sharp turn 90 degrees right followed almost immediately by one 90 degrees to the left, where the lane emerges onto Blake's Lane, in-between East Clandon and West Horsely.
Effingham Forest can be found at the lane's southern extremity. A beautiful ancient woodland crossed by many walking and bike trails, it is worth visiting on a summer's day. This lane has a lot to offer, however due to its difficulty it only scores a 3.
